Siena Cathedral Tickets: Which Pass, and What It Admits

Siena's cathedral is not one admission. It is a monumental complex of eight sites under a single body, sold as two passes — one that includes the roof-level walk and one that does not — and the price of the second changes with the season, because for part of the year the inlaid marble floor is uncovered. Deciding which pass you want takes two minutes and saves the queue-side conversation that ruins a morning. Every figure below is the Opera's own, fetched on 14 August 2026.

The decision, in one table

Both passes are valid for three consecutive days from issue, which is the single most useful thing to know: the complex is not a one-morning visit unless you make it one. The Opera puts the OPA SI PASS itinerary at about two hours.

What the complex actually contains

The Opera lists eight sites under the one ticket: the Cathedral, the Piccolomini Library, the Gate of Heaven, the Baptistry, the Crypt, the Museo dell'Opera, the Panorama from the Unfinished Façade, and the Oratory of St Bernardino.

Two of those are the ones visitors miss. The Panorama — the walk up the wall of the abandoned "new cathedral", the Facciatone — is included, not extra, and it is the best high view in Siena. The Gate of Heaven is the roof-level route, and it is the one thing the cheaper pass does not include: Porta del Cielo covers what that walk is and how it is timed. The floor decides your dates, not your pass

The €2 difference is the least interesting thing about the uncovering. If the inlaid marble floor is why you are coming, the dates are the trip: 27 June – 31 July and 18 August – 15 November 2026. Outside those windows the covers are down and you walk over it without seeing it.

Opening hours, 2026

Hours move by season and the Opera publishes variations on top of them. Treat this as the shape and check the exact day before you go.

Last admission is thirty minutes before closing, everywhere in the complex.

Published variations for 2026: the Cathedral closes at 16:00 on 1 April and at 17:30 on 2–3 April; runs to 18:00 from 13 to 18 April, through May (Sundays and holidays 13:30 – 18:00), and from 22 to 24 June and 5 to 13 August. On 1 December, the patron saint's day, the Cathedral opens 10:30 – 15:00 with last admission at 14:30, and the rest of the complex closes at 17:00.

Online, through the Opera's call centre on +39 0577 286300, or in person at either of two counters, both open daily:

• Piazza Duomo 7 — beside the complex itself.
• The "Dear Guests" Visitor Center, Via di Città 48 — near Piazza del Campo, which is the useful one if you are coming up from the Campo rather than arriving at the Duomo.

Online sales run through the Opera's own ticketing partner. The Opera is a fabbriceria and a not-for-profit: it states that all ticket income goes to conserving and restoring the complex.

Who goes free

The Opera's own concession list for the complex pass: children up to six; residents of and those born in the Comune di Siena; accredited journalists; disabled visitors with a companion; religious; students of the two Sienese universities; and parish groups of the Sienese archdiocese carrying a letter from their parish priest.

Two things the ticket does not settle

Worship is not ticketed. The Cathedral is a working church and the Opera states it is always open to the faithful for private prayer through the Porta del Perdono, the Gate of Forgiveness. Mass is at 09:30 on weekdays in the Madonna del Voto chapel, and at 08:00, 11:00, 12:15 and 18:00 on Sundays, public holidays and their eves — 18:30 in summer. When the floor is uncovered, mass moves to the church of the Santissima Annunziata.

Access is uneven, and the Opera says so plainly. The Cathedral is reachable by a dedicated ramp on the left-hand side of the building. The Opera's own words about the rest: the Museum, Crypt and Baptistry are "currently devoid of systems for disabled access." Frequently Asked Questions

How much are Siena Cathedral tickets? Two passes. The OPA SI PASS at €21,00 covers the whole complex including the roof-level Gate of Heaven, and runs 1 March to 6 January. The complex pass without the roof is €14,00, rising to €16,00 while the inlaid floor is uncovered. Children 7–11 pay €6,00 and €3,00 respectively; under-sevens are free. Both are valid three consecutive days.

What is the difference between the OPA SI PASS and the ordinary ticket? The roof. The OPA SI PASS is the only one that admits you to the Gate of Heaven, the walk at roof level above the nave. Everything else in the complex is on both.

Can you visit Siena Cathedral for free? For worship, yes: the Opera states the Cathedral is always accessible to the faithful for private prayer through the Porta del Perdono. That is not a way around the ticket for sightseeing, and it should not be used as one. Free admission to the complex is otherwise limited to the concession list above.
