    Palio di Provenzano

    The first of the two annual Palio races, run in honour of the Madonna di Provenzano. Four days of trials, contrada dinners and ceremony culminate in ninety seconds of bareback racing around the Campo. As always, the race concludes a four-day festival: the tratta on 29 June, six trial races, and the contrade's ceremonies on race day.

    Palio dell'Assunta — La Tratta (horse selection)

    The morning the Palio truly begins: selection batteries run on the Campo from 9:00, and around midday the Captains choose the ten horses and those ten are assigned to the contrade in public, in an order drawn by lot, in front of the Palazzo Pubblico. Free to watch, and the moment every August strategy is born.

    Palio dell'Assunta — Prove (trial races)

    The trial races before the Palio: six in all, the first on the evening of 13 August, then mornings at 9:00 and evenings at 19:15, ending with the deliberately gentle provaccia at 9:00 on race morning. Times are the customary pattern; the Comune publishes the confirmed order of the prove a few days beforehand. Free, unticketed, and the closest thing to race day without race-day crowds.
