What to Book in Siena Before You Arrive

Siena is a small city, and small cities punish the unbooked in ways large ones do not. There is no second Duomo, no fifth good table on a Tuesday in November, no other week in which the Palio happens. Most of a Siena trip needs no reservation at all — but a short list genuinely does, and the order in which you book it matters more than how far ahead. This page is that list, in the order we would work through it.

The order, and the honest deadline

Book downwards. Each row assumes the ones above it are settled, because a table is worthless without a bed and a bed is worthless in the wrong week.

What does not need booking, and why we would rather say so

A page like this is usually written by someone with something to sell. So, plainly: most of Siena is free to walk into.

The Piazza del Campo has no ticket. The contrade's territory is the street you are standing in. Several of the city's finest interiors cost nothing — Siena for Free is the whole list, and it is longer than visitors expect. The evening passeggiata, the view from the Fortezza, the churches outside the cathedral complex: none of it is booked, and none of it is lesser.

1–2 · The room

3 · The cathedral complex

The Duomo is not one admission but a complex of sites under one body, and the choice worth making before you arrive is which of them you actually want. 4 · The Palio, if that is the trip

The thing most visitors try to book is the thing that cannot be: the race itself is watched from the Campo's centre, and the Comune's own material states that standing there is free. 5 · The table

Siena's best rooms are small, family-run and full. For any house you have crossed the city to reach, assume a reservation is expected rather than optional, and make it before you leave home.

6 · Wine, if wine is the reason

Estate visits are by appointment. That is the whole point of them — you are being received, not processed — and it is why the good ones cannot be improvised on the morning.
