Palio Day, for Everyone Else

For ninety seconds, Siena holds its breath. The Palio dell'Assunta was due on Sunday 16 August 2026, postponed by rain on two consecutive days, and finally run on Tuesday 18 August — won by Nicchio. If the crush of the Campo is not your idea of an afternoon, race day is also the quietest, most generous day of the summer everywhere else — and the valleys know it.

There is no polite way to say this in Siena, so we will say it here: the Palio is not for everyone. It is dense, hot, partisan and profoundly worth it — and it is also entirely possible to love Siena and choose to be somewhere else when the mortaretto fires. On race day the city's gravity pulls every coach, every camera and every spare carabiniere towards one shell-shaped piazza, and the rest of the province exhales. Museums that queue in July stand open and unhurried. Roads that crawl on Saturday roll. This is a guide to spending the Assunta exactly as contentedly as the contradaioli, forty kilometres from the nearest drum.

The morning: Pius II's treasure, in Pienza

The anchor of the day is in Pienza, the small city Pius II rebuilt in his own image. At 11:00 the Museo Diocesano in Palazzo Borgia opens its Tesoro di Pio II for a guided close reading — the second of three summer "A tu per tu" encounters — moving from the pope's embroidered piviale to the gilded bust of Sant'Andrea, the commissions of the humanist pope Enea Silvio Piccolomini. The afternoon: three exhibitions with no queue

Choose by direction, not by ranking.

San Gimignano — L'altra galleria at the Complesso di Santa Chiara brings almost ninety works out of the civic storerooms: bronzes, maiolica, drawings and paintings spanning five centuries, most rarely or never shown. The complex opens 10:00–19:30 through October (last entry 19:00). The towered town itself will be as quiet as it gets all summer.

Castellina in Chianti — Ritorno nel Chianti at the Museo Archeologico del Chianti returns three restored fourteenth- and fifteenth-century altar panels — Bicci di Lorenzo, Cosimo Rosselli, Niccolò di Pietro Gerini — to the territory that commissioned them, after years in the depositories. The museum opens daily 10:00–18:00 through October; the village and its two Chianti siblings make the frame for the visit.

Castiglion Fiorentino — if the day should end louder, the Vintage Festival's final evening runs from 17:00 to midnight around Piazza del Municipio: a vintage market of more than a hundred stalls, and swing and rockabilly across three dance floors spread through the centre.

The evening: a fortress by night, or another palio altogether

South, in the Val d'Orcia, Castiglione d'Orcia keeps its Rocca Aldobrandesca open every August evening from 21:00 to 23:00 — the UNESCO valley by night, from the tower the Aldobrandeschi built to watch the Amiata roads. On Sunday morning the Sala d'Arte San Giovanni below offers guided visits from 10:00 to 13:00, five Madonnas by the Sienese masters — Simone Martini among them — in a single former oratory.

Or cross into Umbria's edge at Città della Pieve, where the Palio dei Terzieri — a fortnight of terzieri rivalry that answers Siena's in its own key — marks San Rocco with the Terziere Castello's festa at 22:00 in Piazza Plebiscito (tribuna €12, standing €4).

If you stay in Siena anyway

The city on Palio morning is its own reward, if you keep to the edges. The Torre del Mangia is open 10:00–13:00 — the ticket office closes at 12:15 — and from the top the tufo-dressed Campo below is the best safe view of the machinery of race day; the Museo Civico beneath it stays closed all day. Know that the Duomo's marble floor is covered until the 17th and uncovered from 18 August — which, after two postponements, is race day itself in 2026, so the floor and the Palio now fall on the same afternoon. The Porta del Cielo roof tours run as usual. And whatever you choose, choose it by 16:00: the Comune's notice for the rescheduled race opens the Campo 16.00 to 18.00, by via Dupré only, with the palchi closing at 16.30, and the city stops moving until the horses do. (The reduced race-day museum hours above were published for the original 16 August date; the Comune has not republished them for the 18th, so confirm on the day.) Getting about the city today. The postponement brought new traffic restrictions, published by the Comune on its WhatsApp channel on race morning, on top of those already in force in the contrade territories and around Piazza del Campo. From 13.30 to about 21.00 the Polizia Locale mans a no-transit line at the entries to the historic centre — piazza Matteotti, via della Sapienza, via Esterna Fontebranda, Due Porte, via Sarrocchi, via San Pietro, via Roma, Porta Pispini and piazzetta d'Ovile. From 14.00 to about midnight there is no transit in Banchi di Sotto, Banchi di Sopra, via di Città, piazza Jacopo della Quercia, piazza Duomo, via del Capitano, piazza Postierla, via San Pietro, Casato di Sopra and Casato di Sotto. Be parked before 13.30, and expect to walk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Siena worth visiting on Palio day if you are not watching the race? Yes, in the morning and at the edges: the Torre del Mangia runs 10:00–13:00, the streets carry the flags and the nerves, and the city is unrepeatably itself. But the Museo Civico is closed, the Campo admits only 16.00–18.00 by via Dupré and seals after, and by late afternoon the city has one thing on its mind.

What is open near Siena on race day? More than on almost any other summer day, and with fewer people: Pienza's Museo Diocesano (11:00 guided visit), the Sala d'Arte San Giovanni in Castiglione d'Orcia (Sunday mornings, 10:00–13:00) with the Rocca open nightly 21:00–23:00, the exhibitions at San Gimignano and Castellina in Chianti, and the Palio dei Terzieri across the Umbrian border at Città della Pieve.

Can you see the Duomo floor on Palio day? In 2026, yes — by accident. The pavement is covered until 17 August and the uncovering resumes on 18 August, which two rain postponements have made race day itself. In an ordinary year the floor returns two days after the Assunta, which is the best argument for planning an extra day either side of the race.
