THE SEVENTEEN CONTRADE · Terzo di Camollia

The Contrada della Lupa

The she-wolf of the Terzo di Camollia, in the northern streets around Vallerozzi.

The Contrada della Lupa occupies the northern district around Via Vallerozzi, in the Terzo di Camollia. Its emblem is the Roman she-wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus — the sign of Siena's legendary tie to Rome, carried in the motto Et Urbis et Senarum Signum et Decus. The district's traditional trade was baking (fornai), and its colours are black and white with orange.

Identity

The Lupa lies in the Terzo di Camollia; its società is the Società 'Romolo e Remo', and its rival is the Istrice.

Patron and feast

The contrada's titolare is St Roch (San Rocco Confessore). Liturgical feast: 16 August. Festa Titolare: around the feast. Annual programme: published each year. The contrada's church is the 16th-century Oratorio di San Rocco, on Via Vallerozzi.
