Halloween in Siena 2026
Trick or treat on the Campo, and a museum afternoon for children
Halloween might not be the first thing you associate with Siena. But on the evening of 31 October, the city's medieval streets fill with children in costume, shopkeepers play along, and the Campo becomes a meeting point for families and visitors alike.
Halloween is not an old Sienese custom in the way the Palio is. It arrived later, and it has found its place in local life: children going door to door, neighbourhood communities planning evenings for their members, and venues putting on events for different ages.
On a Halloween visit, even an ordinary walk through the centre has an extraordinary backdrop.
Does Siena celebrate Halloween?
Yes. Halloween is celebrated in Siena with activities for children and families, along with parties, themed dinners and events for adults. The programme changes from year to year, so check what is on before you travel.
It is the experience of a living community, rather than a set of monuments, that makes it worth the trip. The Contrade, Siena's historic neighbourhood communities, are best known for the Palio, but they also organise social evenings for their members and families. Halloween now sits comfortably alongside those.
Trick or treat in Siena: what it is really like
Our first Halloween in Siena, in 2025, gave us a good introduction to the local celebrations.
Crowds of people, particularly children, were making their way through the streets towards Piazza del Campo. The costumes ranged from the familiar witches and ghosts to a few more inventive monsters.
Then came the trick-or-treating. Children went into shops, approached the counter and asked for dolcetto o scherzetto? — the Italian version of trick or treat.
The shopkeepers played along. Some of the young staff put on a performance of being terrified by the little monsters in front of them. The children were having a wonderful time, and the adults were clearly enjoying it as much.
Where to go
Piazza del Campo is the natural starting point. The shell-shaped square, framed by the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia, is the city's great gathering place.
From there, walk the lanes and streets around it. The approaches to the Campo are full of shops, cafés and small streets, and it is easy to spot families out for the evening.
There is no official city-wide trick-or-treat route. Individual shops and neighbourhoods take part in their own way, and that changes from year to year. If you are visiting with children, follow the lead of local families. A polite buonasera and a cheerful dolcetto o scherzetto? is a good start.
Halloween in Siena: events to plan around
Halloween falls on Saturday 31 October 2026. The events below were listed by their organisers in late October. Booking arrangements and times can change, so confirm each one directly before you go.
Halloween Bestiale at the Natural History Museum
When: 31 October 2026 Where: Museo di Storia Naturale dell'Accademia dei Fisiocritici, Piazzetta Silvio Gigli 2, Siena Who: Children aged 6–12, accompanied by an adult Cost: €8 per person Booking: Compulsory, online at eventi.fisiocritici.it, until places run out
For families who want a planned activity before heading into the centre, Halloween Bestiale is a playful afternoon in the museum. The programme is built around three activities, each lasting half an hour: a hunt for a prehistoric monster, making a spooky spyglass, and using it to find and decode hidden messages around the museum's ground floor and zoological displays.
Sessions run in three overlapping slots, each with a Halloween name:
- Pumpkins (Zucche): 16:30–18:00
- Bats (Pipistrelli): 17:00–18:30
- Mummies (Mummie): 17:30–19:00
Each session has limited places. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your slot. If you want to be in the same session as friends or family, say so when you book.
A Halloween evening at the Contrada dell'Onda
The Contrada Capitana dell'Onda has listed a Halloween evening on 31 October. It begins with trick-or-treating in the neighbourhood, followed by dinner at 20:00 at the Società G. Duprè, on Vicolo San Salvadore. The menu includes pasta all'amatriciana, and the evening finishes with popcorn and a screening of Hotel Transylvania.
The listing says the dinner is open to everyone, not only Contrada members. Places are arranged in advance through the Contrada's app, OndApp, which asked for bookings by Friday 30 October. Check the Contrada dell'Onda's event page for the latest arrangements.
A murder-mystery dinner at Ristorante Malafrasca
On Saturday 31 October at 20:30, Ristorante Malafrasca in Siena hosts a Cena con Delitto Speciale Halloween: a dinner in which the guests become part of a murder mystery that unfolds between the courses. The ticket is €15, paid online, and covers the performance. The meal itself is €25, paid at the restaurant that evening, so the whole evening is about €40 a person.
Booking is online only, and tickets are not refundable. Insurance can be added for €2. If you cannot attend, email the organiser by midnight the day before for a voucher valid for 12 months. The organiser's page showed very few places left in late October.
Book through the organiser's event page.
The Amazing Luna Park at Vanilla
Vanilla, at Strada Provinciale Colligiana 75 in Casone, in the Monteriggioni area, hosts a Halloween party on 31 October. The Amazing Luna Park, created by Circo Nero Italia, brings circus performers, fire acts and a DJ set into the club, with Halloween installations throughout. The organiser has not published start and end times, prices or ticketing, so follow the venue's social channels for details. The inITALY article gives the event's background.
These are different kinds of evenings, from a family afternoon and a neighbourhood dinner to an interactive mystery dinner and late-night entertainment. Check ages, prices and transport with each organiser before you book.
Siena after dark
The medieval centre needs very little decoration. Its narrow streets, steep lanes and brick buildings take on a different character after sunset, and the warm glow of street lighting picks out the stone around the doorways.
Start in Piazza del Campo and wander into the streets that lead away from it. The Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia make an unmistakable backdrop. Nearby, the lanes invite you to slow down and notice details that a busy daytime itinerary tends to miss.
For photographs, early evening works well. The costumes, the shop windows and the contrast between lit streets and a darkening sky all make good pictures. Be considerate of children and residents when you photograph the celebrations.
Halloween is a modern addition, not an old tradition
Siena's own traditions are older and deeper. The Palio, the Contrade and the civic buildings of the medieval city have centuries of history behind them. Halloween is a newer custom here, and it works best when visitors enjoy it as what it is: a chance to see how the city joins in with an imported festival.
Halloween with children in Siena: practical tips
Arrive before dark. A walk through the historic centre is easier before the busiest part of the evening.
Book organised events early. Museum sessions and dinners have limited places.
Follow local participation. Not every shop takes part in trick-or-treating. Look for businesses that are clearly welcoming children, and respect those that are closed or not involved.
Wear comfortable shoes. The streets are steep in places and paved with stone.
Keep younger children close. The centre gets busy, and narrow streets are hard to navigate in a large group.
Plan the way home. If you are staying outside the centre, check parking, buses or taxis before the evening gets late, and allow extra time for the walk into the centre.
Is October a good time to visit Siena?
Yes, if you enjoy historic cities, autumn colour and local events. The summer crowds have eased, and the Tuscan countryside turns to autumn.
You can spend the day in the Duomo, the Museo Civico or the historic streets, have an aperitivo, and then watch the centre change as families head out in costume. For families, a museum activity followed by an early-evening walk around the Campo makes a good plan. Couples and friends may prefer a themed dinner.
So, what is Halloween in Siena really like?
It is a mixture of the familiar and the unexpected: costumes, sweets, children knocking on shop doors, themed museum activities, dinners and parties, all set in a medieval city.
The most memorable part is often the exchange between visitors, residents and shopkeepers. A tiny monster met by an equally convincing display of mock terror from behind a shop counter captures the spirit of the evening rather well.
