While Piazza del Campo emptied out between the two Palii, Siena quietly became one of Europe's more serious classical music capitals. The Chigiana International Festival & Summer Academy ran from 7 July to 1 September 2026 and has now closed. Its grandest events — the free open-air Concerto per l'Italia in Piazza del Campo on 18 July and a symphonic gala on 19 July — bookended the opening fortnight; the paid programme continued across the city and the Terre Senesi into September. This is the record of the 2026 edition; the 2027 programme is normally announced in spring.

An Academy, Not Just a Festival

The Accademia Musicale Chigiana was founded in 1939, housed in the frescoed halls of Palazzo Chigi Saracini, and has spent the decades since as a genuine finishing school for virtuoso musicians rather than a purely public-facing venue. 2026 was the festival's twelfth edition under the thematic title "Isole" — Islands — directed by Nicola Sani. The scale was substantial for a city Siena's size: more than 100 performances, over 800 artists, 8 opera and music-theatre productions, 8 symphonic concerts, chamber music, electronic works, and seven ensembles in residence across Siena and the wider Terre Senesi.

A shorter spring companion series, Primavera Chigiana, ran from 12 May to 27 June — worth noting for next year's planning.

The Campo Concerts

The most accessible events of the festival were also its grandest: two free, open-air evenings in Piazza del Campo. The Concerto per l'Italia on 18 July brought the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Daniel Harding to the Campo — Ravel's Alborada del gracioso, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition in Ravel's orchestration, and Stefano Bollani as soloist in a jazz-band arrangement of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue — presented with Rai Cultura and Rai Radio 3. The Gran Galà Sinfonico closed the pair on the evening of 19 July, with the Chigiana young talents and the Orchestra Fondazione Luciano Pavarotti under Daniele Gatti.

Through the rest of the summer the paid programme's peaks were the new production of Mozart's Don Giovanni staged with the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto, and Bach's Mass in B minor with the Mozarteum Salzburg, booked through chigiana.org, TicketOne.it or the box office at Palazzo Chigi Saracini.

Elsewhere in the Programme

The festival opened on 7 July at the Chiesa di Sant'Agostino with Hans Werner Henze's Requiem, part of a season-long tribute marking the centenary of the composer's birth — 41 of his works feature across the programme. The opening night set the tone: Bachtrack's five-star review called the performance "a compelling lesson in listening", with Kai Röhrig conducting the Orchestra della Toscana alongside trumpeter Jeroen Berwaerts and pianist Emanuele Arciuli — and singled out the way Röhrig "revealed the architecture that binds these disparate episodes together". Later highlights included a new production of Mozart's Don Giovanni staged with the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale di Spoleto, and Bach's Mass in B minor performed in collaboration with the Mozarteum Salzburg.

The 2026 programme also carried two newly commissioned world premieres: a piece by Philippe Manoury, and a requiem by Andrea Mannucci written in memory of Giulia Cecchettin, whose 2023 murder became a national point of reflection on violence against women in Italy — the commission is framed by the Accademia as a civic as well as artistic statement.

The free Piazza del Campo concerts (Concerto per l'Italia, 18 July; Gran Galà Sinfonico, 19 July) were the reservation-only centrepieces of the opening fortnight — free, but not walk-up.

What to wear: smart casual was standard. Palazzo Chigi Saracini is not air-conditioned — dress for a warm Sienese evening rather than a formal concert hall.

Good to know: the programming assumed some familiarity with classical repertoire rather than aiming at newcomers, though the Piazza del Campo evenings were deliberately more accessible.
