Where to Stay for the Palio di Siena: Hotels, Strategy, and What to Book

The question of where to sleep for the Palio is not about views. It is about proximity, logistics, and the layered experience of the four days. A room two minutes from the Campo means walking into the atmosphere at any hour and attending the trial races easily; a countryside estate means comfort and tranquillity, at the cost of planning every visit around transfers.

Both 2026 Palii Have Now Run

The Palio di Provenzano was won by the Contrada dell'Aquila in July, its first race since 1992. The Palio dell'Assunta, due on 16 August and postponed by rain on two consecutive days, was run on Tuesday 18 August 2026 — won by the Nobile Contrada del Nicchio, ending a 28-year wait. Nothing remains to book for 2026. For 2027 and beyond, begin planning no later than September 2026.

Palazzo Ravizza

Pian dei Mantellini 34 · Boutique · 500 metres from the Campo. One of the few hotels inside the walls with parking on site — the hotel bills it as unique, though it is not the only one. Spaces are limited and cannot be reserved. There is also a garden with panoramic views over the Sienese hills. Family-run for decades, blending medieval foundations with early-20th-century elegance. Roughly eight to ten minutes on foot to the Campo.

Grandstand Seats and Balcony Tickets: How They Relate to Hotels

No hotel room gives you a view of the race. If you want an elevated, seated, private position, you need a separate ticket: a grandstand seat (palco), a balcony position, or a private window above the track. The four viewing zones are Casato (a curve), Mossa (start/finish — the most sought-after), Fonte Gaia (alongside the central section), and San Martino (the tightest curve, where the drama concentrates). For the rescheduled 17 August race, most positions are gone, with only late returns surfacing through the specialist agencies. For 2027, book 12 months ahead through authenticated agencies — Palio ticket fraud is well-documented.

Practical Information for Palio Week

ZTL: Siena's historic centre is a restricted traffic zone; driving in without authorisation triggers automatic fines. Palazzo Ravizza is one of the few hotels inside the walls with parking on site — the hotel bills it as unique, though it is not the only one. Spaces are limited and cannot be reserved. Arriving by rail or coach: Siena's station sits below the city at Piazzale Rosselli, on the Empoli–Siena line, with direct Regionale services roughly hourly from Florence Santa Maria Novella (about an hour and a half); from Pisa, change at Empoli. A free mechanised ascent runs from the station up to Porta Camollia. Autolinee Toscane's 131R coach also runs direct from Florence — from via Orti Oricellari until 13 September 2026, and from Firenze Autostazione outside that window; check at-bus.it before travelling. Restaurants: book Palio-week dinners before you arrive. Rain: the Palio can be delayed by a full day, as at the 2026 Provenzano (pushed from 2 to 3 July).
