Palio di Provenzano 2026: Aquila Ends a 34-Year Wait

The rain came before the horses did. What should have been a Thursday-evening race on 2 July was postponed as a storm swept the clay of the Piazza del Campo — the track judged unsafe, the mossa held over to the following day. By Friday evening the Campo was dry, the light was long, and the Eagle's long wait was about to end.

The four days before

A Palio is decided over four days, not ninety seconds — and the 2026 Provenzano began, as it always does, with the tratta on the morning of 29 June. After the selection batteries on the Campo, ten horses were assigned to the running contrade by lot, drawn on the stage in front of the Palazzo Pubblico — a lottery no captain can influence and every strategy must follow. It was, by common consent, a strong lot, with three past winners among the ten. The Eagle drew the best of them: Diodoro, the most coveted horse of the year. Onda took Anda e Bola and Oca took Benitos, the other two proven winners. That same evening began the valzer delle monte — the waltz of the mounts — captains and jockeys negotiating pairings late into the night. Aquila confirmed Giovanni Atzeni, Tittia, who had won the 2025 Provenzano on this same horse in Oca's colours. From that moment the pairing was the favourite, and the other nine knew it.

Then the trials: five prove were run across the following days — the sixth was lost to the weather — mornings at nine and evenings at a quarter to eight, each a rehearsal of the mossa before a full Campo — free to watch, and the best education in the race there is. The prova generale ran on the evening of 1 July; the provaccia, the deliberately half-hearted final trial, was due on the morning of the 2nd — but it was cancelled outright, the track already unusable. By then the city was ready. The weather was not.

The race

At the mossa, the ten contrade lined up in the order drawn by lot: Oca, Bruco, Leocorno, Torre, Civetta, Drago, Aquila, Giraffa, Valdimontone, and — as rincorsa, the horse that enters from behind to trigger the start — Onda. When Onda finally moved, the rope dropped clean, and Aquila broke among the fastest away. From there Tittia rode the race that the best jockeys make look inevitable: three laps of the shell-shaped piazza, bareback, the tightest turn at San Martino taken without giving up the line. When Diodoro crossed in front of the judges' stand, the Terzo di Città erupted.

Why this one mattered

The Aquila had not won a Palio since 3 July 1992, when the legendary Aceto — Andrea Degortes — carried the horse Galleggiante home for the Eagle. In the years since, the contrada had acquired the unwanted nickname of nonna, the grandmother — the district still waiting for the win that would not come. On Friday, that ended.

For Giovanni Atzeni, the victory was a twelfth in a career of forty-two Palii run — and a second consecutive July win aboard Diodoro, having taken the 2025 Provenzano in the colours of the Oca. The seven-year-old bay gelding now has two victories from three races on the Campo. The winning drappellone — the hand-painted silk banner that is the only prize — was the work of artist Ismaele Nones.

None of which quite captures the scene afterwards: the Eagle's yellow, black and blue carried through the city into the small hours, the banner passed hand to hand up Via del Casato, grown men in tears. It is not a sporting result. It is a debt, decades deep, finally paid.

What it means for the rest of the summer

One race remains in 2026. The Palio dell'Assunta was due on Sunday 16 August and was postponed by rain on two consecutive days to Tuesday 18 August 2026, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and falling the day after Ferragosto, when Italians from across the country pour into Siena and the Campo takes on an electricity all its own. The ten-contrada field for August is set separately, by the same combination of rotation and lottery — the July result changes nothing about who runs next.

If the Provenzano has left you wanting to be there for the second race, the window is narrow. Rooms in and near the historic centre are largely gone, with only late returns surfacing; the same is true of grandstand and balcony positions.

The result: Palio di Provenzano 2026 — won by the Contrada dell'Aquila, jockey Giovanni Atzeni (Tittia) on Diodoro. Run Friday 3 July, postponed one day from 2 July by rain.
The next race: Palio dell'Assunta — due Sunday 16 August 2026, postponed by rain on two consecutive days and now due Tuesday 18 August 2026. Four days of trials and ceremony preceded it, from Thursday 13 August.
