Who Won the Palio di Siena 2026
Both 2026 races, answered in eight languages
Siena runs two Palios a year. The first, the Palio di Provenzano, was run on 3 July 2026 and won by Aquila. The second, the Palio dell'Assunta, was due on Sunday 16 August, postponed by rain twice, and finally run on Tuesday 18 August — won by Nicchio. Below, both answers in eight languages.
NICCHIO WINS THE PALIO DELL'ASSUNTA 2026. After two postponements for rain — from Sunday 16 August to Monday 17, then to Tuesday 18 — the race was run at 19.00 on Tuesday 18 August. Nicchio took the Drappellone, ridden by Giovanni Atzeni, Tittia, on Anda e Bola. Confirmed by the Comune di Siena's own WhatsApp channel on the evening of the race. That channel is not readable by any tool this site's editors run and was relayed directly by the editor monitoring it; it is the Comune's own source, and across this Palio's two postponements it was consistently ahead of the website.
"Leggendario Tittia!" — legendary Tittia — was how both La Nazione and Il Messaggero independently headlined it: his thirteenth career Palio, equalling Trecciolino, and, coming after his July victory for Aquila, his fourth cappotto (both Palios of a calendar year), an all-time record, one short of Aceto's career total of fourteen. It also ended a 28-year wait for Nicchio, whose previous win was 16 August 1998. He took a heavy fall after the race had already finished, when several spectators invaded the track before the field had stopped — witnessed directly and relayed by 008 — and Tittia and Anda e Bola went down together. He was taken by ambulance to hospital, conscious; doctors diagnosed a head injury and admitted him for precautionary observation, with his condition also reported as not a cause for concern. The August trials, and why they do not predict the race
Six prove are run before the Palio, morning and evening, from the day the horses are handed over until the morning of the race itself. All six have now run — six trials, five different winners, and nothing in them that tells you who wins when the race is finally run.

A trial win carries no advantage into the Palio, and this is structural rather than a matter of opinion. The order at the canapi for every one of the six trials is fixed in advance under article 62 of the Regolamento per il Palio, and all six orders were published together before a horse ran. The Palio's own order is drawn separately on the day. The two are unrelated by construction — so a contrada winning three trials has won three trials, and nothing else.
The provaccia, the sixth, is the one where the horses are deliberately held back. The Comune's own guide explains why: the riders keep them "trattenuti forzatamente dal correre risparmiandone le forze" — held back from running, to save their strength for the evening.
