THE SEVENTEEN CONTRADE · Terzo di Città

The Contrada della Chiocciola

The snail of the Terzo di Città, in the streets rising toward Porta San Marco.

The Contrada della Chiocciola occupies the western edge of the Terzo di Città, along Via San Marco toward the city gate. Its emblem is a snail on a silver field, studded with the initials U and M — for Umberto I and Margherita of Savoy — among red roses. Its colours are red and yellow with a blue trim. The district's traditional trade was leatherworking (cuoiai).
