The Contrada della Pantera

The panther of the Terzo di Città, in the streets around Stalloreggi and Pian dei Mantellini.

The Contrada della Pantera occupies the western quarter around Stalloreggi and Pian dei Mantellini, in the Terzo di Città. Its emblem is a rampant panther on a silver field, with a white-and-blue canton bearing the "U" of Umberto of Savoy. Its colours are red and sky blue with white, and its military companies are those of Stalloreggi di Dentro and di Fuori. The contrada is first documented in the bull-hunt (caccia ai tori) of 1546.

Identity

The Pantera sits in the Terzo di Città; its società is the Società 'Due Porte', and its rival is the Aquila.

Patron and feast

The contrada's titolare is the Beheading of St John the Baptist (San Giovanni Decollato). Liturgical feast: 29 August. Festa Titolare: late August. Annual programme: published each year. The contrada's church is San Niccolò al Carmine, at Pian dei Mantellini.

Museum and what to see

The Museo della Contrada della Pantera, on Via San Quirico, holds the contrada's collections, including a 17th-century Beheading of St John the Baptist by Antonio Nasini, displayed in the contrada's Sala delle Vittorie. Visits are available by reservation or during announced special openings.
