The Contrada Priora della Civetta

The owl of the Terzo di San Martino, in the heart of the medieval city around Piazza Tolomei.

The Contrada Priora della Civetta occupies the central streets around the Castellare, Via Cecco Angiolieri and Piazza Tolomei, in the Terzo di San Martino. Its emblem is a crowned owl on a branch — the bird sacred to Minerva. Its colours are red and black with white.

Title and identity

The Civetta carries the honorific Priora. Its società is the Società Cecco Angiolieri.

Patron and feast

The contrada's titolari are St Anthony of Padua and St Bernardo Tolomei (Sant'Antonio da Padova e San Bernardo Tolomei). Liturgical feast: 13 June. Festa Titolare: around the feast day. Annual programme: published each year. The contrada's oratory stands on Via Cecco Angiolieri.

Museum and what to see

The Museo della Contrada Priora della Civetta, in the Castellare degli Ugurgieri, holds the contrada's Palio banners, costumes, silver and sacred objects. Visits are available by reservation or during announced special openings.
